One of the worst things about family violence is what it sets children up to expect from their own relationships.
“Without intervention, most of these kids will go on to either be victims or perpetrators of family violence,” Lesley Robson says sadly, and it’s a chilling thought.
Lesley Robson is BaptistCare HopeStreet’s Manager at our Domestic Violence Supported Accommodation and she recently spoke with Kidspot about our Break Free program for children who have experienced trauma as a result of family violence.
We talk a lot about the need for crisis support for families escaping violent situations – we know how important it is to remove women and children from these scenarios. What is spoken about less, however, is the fact that many of the children who experience this go on to seek out dynamics similar to those they saw growing up, whether it be as a perpetrator or as a victim.
“Just because someone has escaped a violent situation, it doesn’t mean they have escaped the ramifications on their life,” she continues, “which is why what we are doing with these kids is so important.”
